Dark Waters Album Art
I spent a couple of hours last week working on the dark waters album art for Dark Waters. It’s really awesome and totally psychedelic. Here’s what I got, and then I’ll tell you all about how I did it (well, no trade secrets LOL).
I used four different photographs from Florida nature photographer and friend Bob Webb Images and brought them into my favorite free Paint.NET program, then I added text to the album cover. Here’s the final album cover:
You’ll notice that I used the lyric author’s name as well as my own in the album art. Randy McQuilkin penned the poetry that was set to music on this album so he will be receiving 50% of all after-expense revenue from the sales of this album. He also deserves to be on the twisted “scrabble-board” right next to me.
You might not want to drop acid and look at this picture for too long LOL. Or maybe you do… I know I would “back in the day”.
So here is now this came to be.
I used four individual images for this piece of art:
The last picture, the one right above this sentence, is NOT some kind of computer generated image. It’s actually oil on water, taken with the right sunlight, with Bob’s Olympus digital camera. No filters, no special lenses, nothing. Just straight up photography by a guy with a VERY talented eye for lighting and perspective.
I set each of those photos into separate layers and set transparency and blending on each one, and kept playing with the picture order, transparency, and blending until I came up with this:
The rest was easy. I spent some time weeding through the hundreds of fonts on my PC and came up with one that looks like scrabble letters and I thought that looked cool. After playing with it for a while I realized I could probably make intersecting word groups, just like Scrabble, and so after experimenting with it I found I could in fact include Randy McQuilkin and Jerry Boutot over Dark Waters and that was really cool!
The end result is this:
Of course, this is just the cover art. I have plans to use those orignal images for the back cover and the CD itself.
For the first time in my life I’m actually going to release videos for the songs on the album. They won’t be the massively produced MTV-esque videos, though. I plan on videoing myself playing all of the guitars, bass, and doing vocals in the studio and producing a fairly polished version of each song and posting them to my YouTube channel. It’ll be a few weeks before the videos start going up. Just like with an album, there are 10 songs and I have to record near-perfect performances so that I can synch everything up to the studio recording of the songs. I’m REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IT!!!
OK, it’s off to work I go. My next blog will be more on the album art. I plan to finish it this week and unveil it in my next post.
Love and Prosperity to you ALL! Have an AWESOME Day!
