Aaaaannnnnndddddd…. Go! The ride begins.

Drifting Away is a song about the slow, steady, and methodical progression of separation that begins the moment that a new human life begins (outside the womb – that is to say, after birth). Separation of the infant from it’s mother, it’s vessel, it’s safety. Separation “from the dream from which you were torn”. The moment we are born, the journey to autonomy begins. And this song is all about that separation.

I use the metaphor of the mother as being “the mother ship” and the child is “drifting away” from her, day after day after day. The struggle to live begins here, after we are born. We are no longer cocooned and safe inside the warmth and love of the mother. The mother is the envelopment of love and perfection that we only experience for the very first 9 months of our lives. Then it’s all downhill after that. Every day you are drifting away, and the mother ship is a stranger.

I hope you really enjoy this song. It is so deep on so many levels, even now, so many years after I wrote it. Because even now, today, I am still drifting into danger.

Drifting Away Lyrics
by Jerry Boutot

What do you think must go on in a mind
that has not yet begun to rationalize?
How does it combat wave after wave
of loving emotions and violent rage?

Frustration engulfs you
A helpless vessel are you
So totally dependent but disconnected
The mother ship controls you

Every day you are drifting away and the mother ship is a stranger
For once you were safe within her frame but now you drift into danger

I know it isn’t easy
and I know it’s going to take long
And every day you grow farther away
from the dream from which you were torn

As rationality moves in on you
and takes it’s deadly hold
You slowly lose the natural sense
you survived on for so long

Every day you are drifting away and the mother ship is a stranger
For once you were safe within her frame but now you drift into danger
