Abuse! The mantra of youth!

OK, let me say up front, clearly and specifically, that I understand and completely have respect for anyone who was truly abused as a child. That’s not what this song is about. This is about the perception that ALL children feel that they were treated badly by their mean old parents. Some children are lucky enough to have pot smoking hippie parents who, like all those mom’s on the Bounty commercials, just laugh and smile when you break a glass of cranberry juice on the rug or run around with the dog on the white carpets just after mudding in the driveway. But for the rest of us, the reality is that we did stupid shit, and our mom’s (and dad’s if you were really bad) would yell at us and spank us – and if you grew up when I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s, that meant the severity of the incident dictated the brutality of the spanking weapon in this order: hand, wooden spoon, spatula, belt, and switch. Now the switch was the special treat, because we would have to go cut our own off the forsythia bush in the back yard and all the while we were being told – via yelling from the back door – “you better bring a good one or I’ll go cut one myself”.

As children, we all feel some level of abuse at some point, and in this story, the subject of the perceived abuse is going to grow up and “get back at you”. That would have been me, if you were able to look into a crystal ball and see the crap I did to my poor mother. She did the best she could, and so did my dad (rest his soul) and I’m surprised they didn’t end up in the looney bin.

But I digress. This song is about the perceived abuse that the bad little kid in the story feels, and how angry and vengeful he is shaping his future to be.

Some day I’m coming after you, but no longer will I be a child. Sums it up.

I Am Invincible Lyrics
by Jerry Boutot

What am I?
Why am I?
Who am I?
Where am I?
How big is the world?
And who is God?
Why did he put me here?
And why is life hard?

Oh mother dear just what did I do?
To make you feel that you must abuse?
I don’t even have to listen to you
And if you hurt me I’ll get even with you

‘Cause life isn’t easy and life isn’t fair
And anyone who hurts me had better beware
I’m gonna grow up more surely than not
My vengeance is sweet and my hatred runs hot

And I am invincible
I am immortal
I will surely never die
As long as I am a child
I am helpless against your inflictions
This may be true
But some day I’m coming after you
But no longer will I be a child

If you had been nicer, this would be easier
I would have grown up and we would be friends
But you had no respect for me when I was small
Now there isn’t any more hope for you at all

‘Cause I am invincible
I am immortal
I will surely never die
Forever will I be a child
I am vulnerable to your inflictions
This may be true
But some day I’m coming after you
But no longer will I be a child
