Get down on your knees and Praise <fill in the blank for your particular belief system> the answer to the greatest question ever asked is in This Song!

I’ve written about it before and I’ll say it again. This album came to me in an outpouring of what I can only describe as devine inspiration. The entire album came to me and I wrote it all down in one sitting. This song is truly the proverbial “icing on the cake” for the album. It’s a long song – it covers a lot of ground.

Starting out with the subject of the album now old and near death. “It’s clearly evident to me all I have left to do now is die”. If those words don’t stab you in the heart with an emotional response, maybe this will: “As I face up to this reality, I hang down my head and I cry”.

I’ve always been fascinated with the human proclivity to ignore the reality of mortality when we are young and then turn to religion when we get older. I think that death is to human beings, and always will be, something similar to the sun coming up on the horizon. When we are young it is the middle of the night, life is all dreamy and starlight. But as we get older, and keep looking backwards at our past and never forward into our future, death starts to creep in on us as slow as the light in the sky appears in the east. but we keep looking west, at our past, but we know… we just know… that it’s coming. We can feel the heat of it on our backs. We begin to mold our attitudes, our perspectives, and our hopes, dreams, and expectations to allow us to adjust to this fact: you can look at the past all you want but the future is still coming, and the inevitable end of this short “vacation” from the eternal bliss of our true spiritual existence will come as surely as the sun will rise. Then there are those who never look back and can see the sun is coming, the end of our blissful night-like ignorance of our mortality is coming, and they race to do what they came to do, what they are made for, what they need to accomplish or give everything they have to trying to accomplish, because they can see the end.

But why do we think of this mortal condition as light and death as darkness? Why are human beings so obsessed with the habitual necessity to make up horrible, terrible, scary visions of the afterlife? Is it because when we close our eyes to try and imagine it, all we see is darkness, and through darkness comes fear of the unknown? Personally, I think it’s the other way around. I think this world is the darkness, and death is the light, because it is ultimately where we came from and where we will return.

This song takes us on a journey past the “sudden jolt of electricity” that the soul feels when it is torn from the human body, and into a light that forces us to judge ourselves. It loosely marries eastern and western philosophy, both identifying “the light of the world” as God and also a test that we can only pass if we can judge ourselves worthy of that light.

There isn’t much more that I can add about this song that the lyrics themselves don’t say straight up. So, I ask you:

Is a hole in the ground all that’s waiting for us?

Hole In The Ground (Lyrics)
by Jerry Boutot

Part 1 – Old Age/Dying

I look all around me and I see
that everyone I know is dying
We used to be young and free
Now we’re chained to old age and we’re dying

It’s clearly evident to me
All I have left to do now is die
As I face up to this reality
I hang down my head and I cry

We’ve got a lifetime of knowledge but little respect
Oh how could life let this happen to us
We work all our lives and what do we get?
Is a hole in the ground all that’s waiting for us?

As I lose my grip on reality
I’m drifting from mother society
And insanity gets a grip on me
And I’m losing my sense of security

I can feel death all around me
Fear surrounds me and my heart starts to pound me
And the pain is far beyond all imagining
But somehow I know all the pain will be ending

Part 2 – Death/Afterlife

Like a sudden jolt of electricity
Like a cannon ball at high velocity
I am soaring through the air at light speed
Then I finally see reality

I laugh and laugh as I fly through the sky
It is better than any earth high
Exaltation and fear swept aside
As I am part of an all knowing mind

And the real truth is becoming clear to me
That my physical life was only a dream
And I laugh again at the understanding
That I have only just awakened from that dream

The world was just a test for me
God put me to sleep in a body
If I had real faith in him as the supreme being
Then I would survive the test

And I would have really believed before I died
That I would enter a new wonderful life
And all that had happened to me was meant to be
And it fit into his plan irrevocably

I can feel and see blinding light surround me
It is hot and good and it is ecstasy
And I let it in and take me willingly
Then I soar into the heavens at light speed

The gates of the city open to me
I feel great presences all around me
The light of the world appears before me
And I know that the light is Godly

He need not speak any words to me
I know what he knows about me
A silence falls all around me
An understanding enters into me

My heart knows this is judgement day
I look into the light with no shame
Then the light enfolds and enters me
And then I fly like the wind

All the memories of my life drifting away
And I feel all of the souls who are with me
I can feel them as if they were a part of me
We are as one enormous entity

Part 3 – the Moral/Warning

So let me tell you friend
That this is not the end
Here there is no end for you or for me
Forever condemned in the fires of Hell
Or forever in Heaven and free
The choice is not up to you or me
In this life you will buy that destiny
And in the next you will surely pay the fee
