Sarah is the Track 1 of my album Tip of the Sword. When I sat down to write about this song I stared at the screen for a long time before I could begin. It is the first song in a series of 9 songs (there’s really 10 songs but Doctor Psychodelectric and Going Home were combined into one long epic) that tell a true story about a time in my life when I was very young. Sarah was my first true love. I had girlfriends before and was even married and divorced before I met Sarah, but I think it’s possible to think you know what true love is until you find it. Then everything else is but a shadow of the real thing. Don’t get me wrong (especially if you are one of my ex-es LOL). I loved. I was able to love. I knew heartbreak and heartache. But nothing like what I felt with Sarah. The relationship I have and the love I have with my wife now, Suzanne, after nearly 24 years of marriage far overshadows this “first true love” that I had with Sarah. The difference is that I lost Sarah and it broke my heart into a million pieces. The biggest component of the grief was guilt. It was my own fault. I had too much lust.

But before I go telling the whole story of the album, let me tell you about the Sarah Lyrics and what they mean.

Sarah Lyrics

You have often heard me say (if you read my blog or listen to any of my radio appearances) that I write music that is based on the emotion that is being conveyed, or at least trying to be conveyed in the lyrics. So when this song starts, it begins like a bouncy, fun, calliope song because that’s what it was. It was a happy, free, incredible time for me as a young adult. We were experimenting with hallucinogens and smoking lots of weed. I had a band that I loved and lived with one of the members. But was lonely. I had good friends. Lots of them. I had my share of trysts and one night stands, but anybody who knows the difference between sex and love knows that you can have sex every day with somebody new and be very lonely. I was lonely. I needed something real. And one day I was just walking down the street and saw her in the window of a store. The rest is history. We met, we went out, and we fell deeply and passionately in love with each other. We made those promises that lovers make – that we would be together forever and our love would never end. But I had been married before and in fact I had two children who I did not have a relationship with. It’s complicated: don’t judge me. There’s fault on both sides of that equation and let’s just leave it at that. I had to tell her, and I did. What did she do? She was in love and she accepted it. And then I decided I had to stand up and be a man and take responsibility. I got a better job and I tried to figure out how to do the right thing, but I was just too damn young, and my partying and my rock band and my desire to be free and unencumbered from the past finally won out. But I tried.

Sarah (Lyrics)
by Jerry Boutot

Let me introduce myself I sing in a rock-n-roll band
I don’t live home I live with friends my past is kinda sad
I have a lot of good friends but I’m lonelier than I’ve ever been
I need to feel something that’s real I need a love that lasts

One day I saw an angels face as I walked down the street
Golden girl with golden curls she smiled at me so sweet
We held each other closely and made love again and again
Promising love everlasting a true love that never could end

Sarah, my love – Sarah, my life
Come with me princess – come be my wife
Sarah, my love – Sarah, my life
Eternally our love will still be alive

Lately I’ve been thinking hard about things I have done in my past
Some things could make me lose you I know that it’s hard to accept
I know I’m not a criminal but I’m in prison with a haunting ghost
I run away and it catches up but there’s no escaping without you

Now I’m tired of running and I’ve got a reason to stop
I’ve got to turn and face the task and be a better man
I want to try everything to be what you love in me
I want you forever so I’m getting better and I’m doing it all for you and me

Sarah, my love – Sarah, my life
Come with me princess – come with me wife
Sarah, my love – Sarah, my life
Eternally our love will still be alive
