Authors Note: I guarantee you the lead solos in this song are going to kick your ass!!!

Partying. Casual sex. Sexual conquests. Dropping Acid. Smoking Weed. Drinking Shots. Ecstasy. Raves. Clubbing. Fighting in the streets.

The life of the “modern day warrior”. My friend Neil Peart, the famous drummer of Rush (well OK he’s not my friend yet but it is one of my goals in life to meet him and talk philosphy until the sun comes up, OK? Sue me LOL) said it this way:

A modern day warrior – mean, mean stride
Today’s Tom Sawyer – mean, mean pride

And those two lines pretty much sum up the attitudinal position that the life of our subject character has taken on. This guy has gone into the Partying Trade like it’s a full time job. We don’t actually get to know for a fact that he ever really did hold down any jobs, but one must assume by the lyrics in this song that he does have responsibilities:

“the demands of my responsibilities have gotten their clutches on me”

Our guy wakes up one day, lifts the veil on his smoke dominated lifestyle just long enough to take note of what is going on all around him. Just long enough to see that people he loves are dying – friends, family – and now the great question seeps into his consciousness like it does for almost all fully grown adults at one point or another – God. Where are my loved ones now that they are gone? Is there really a God? Why am I alive? Does God have a special purpose for me? Or will this life always be a struggle?

Ahhhhh…. questions of life and death, god, destiny, purpose, meaning… we are all plagued by these once we pass the threshold of invincible youth into the jaws of knowledge of our impending mortality.

Time Flies Lyrics
by Jerry Boutot

As the smoke of a lifetime of partying clears
It becomes increasingly easy to see
The demands of my responsibility
Have gotten their clutches on me

Tired of fighting and running away
I just stand and watch as the smoke dissipates
I see people I love dying all around
And I think about God and of where they must be

And I wonder…
Is there really a God?
If there is…
Then why am I alive?
Does he have some special purpose for me?
Or will I always fight to survive?

Now I stand in the light of a brand new day
And I look up to God in a wondrous way
And he tells me I am his lamb gone astray
And the struggle will end when I follow his way

Two roads in this life you can take
But the question is: where does each one end?
It’s the hard road that leads you to Heaven’s Gate
And the easy road rolls you on down into Hell

And I wonder…
Is there really a God?
If there isn’t…
Then why are you alive?
Do you think when you die your life will just end?
If you do, when you die I think you’ll be surprised

You can never take back what you did here my son
Or how time flies when you’re having fun
Just go on living like you do my son
Oh how time flies when you’re having fun
Don’t think about God when you’re sinning my son
Or how time flies when you’re having fun
When you’re burning in hell you’ll remember him son
And how time flies when you’re having fun
‘Cause you won’t be having any fun my son
Eternity in Hell is a long time, son
